Dorothy Bell
Born:
Titles: Co-founder of the Lambda Services Bureau
Dorothy Bell was a lesbian feminist and one of the principle members of the Lambda Services Bureau.
She graduated from University of Colorado, Colorado Springs in December, 1975, alongside Don Collier.
She went on to found the Lambda Services Bureau alongside Malachi Truman Harris and Donaciano Martinez in March 1975. The experience unfortunately led to some frustrations. Alongside a lengthy battle with the IRS over the organization's 501(c)3 status, Dorothy was frustrated with gender-related inequity she was encountering in working with gay men.
Don Collier interviewed Dorothy Bell and Malachi Truman Harris about their experience of the Lambda Services Bureau for OUT FRONT in October, 1977. Dorothy had the following to say. [1]
"I feel ripped off and very angry that mostly women were always the ones who were available to do the counseling. education, and referral services of Lambda. Most of the men who benefited from our services were not willing to put anything back into the organization. On the other hand, I was very leery about most of those gay males putting anything back into Lambda because of the type of mentality they had. It seemed like they only things they were concerned about were lovers, tricks, cars, ball games, who's cute, and the latest outfits."
I've evolved to lesbian separatism or the most part, but I see it more as people separatism. I've also evolved to a place now where I will no longer do anything politically unless it's exclusively with feminists. Both women and men would have to be feminists before I will work with them. I simply don't have the energy anymore to deal with people who aren't sensitive and understanding of feminism. Trying to deal with that kind of mentality anymore would be forcing me back into working within the system and I'm just not willing to do that anymore. The feminists I worked with inside and outside Lambda, whether they were women or men, were revolutionaries who also got caught up working through the system and thought they'd give it one more try. As for me. I'm not going to try that anymore. I'm in a place now where if people are willing to go into the streets, then call me up, but if not, then don't bother me.
