Walking Tall - A Lesbian Organization
Founded: July, 1990
Ended: Unknown
Founder: Pat Killen [1]
Mission: "To assist lesbians in developing positive self-image and lifestyles as well as to educate the community at large regarding issues of the Lesbian community."
An organization for lesbians that was announced in the July 1990 issue of Gayspeak. It was the recipient of a $2000 grant from the Chinook Fund, a fund that supported organizations dedicated to social change.
One of the most important goals of Walking Tall is a "Lesbian Space" - an actual physical space where Lesbian events can take place and where Lesbians can meet experience growth opportunities. This "Lesbian Space" would serve as a focal point for the Lesbian community and a base for outreach into the community.
Membership was open to all lesbians and women supportive of lesbians, but services were available to everyone regardless of gender or identity.
No more information about the organization has been found yet. If you know more about Walking Tall, please Contribute To The Project.
An Icy Reception
In this same issue of Gayspeak in which David Eidson, the Vice President of the Pikes Peak Gay Community Center at the time, published the following letter:
'Organizations.' Just recently a new organization opened in our (gay) conmunity. I used the word 'opened' instead of 'formed' or 'started' because in the last year, I have come to realize that these organizations in our community, are mini-business'. Each organization is competing for our time, money and dedication.
...
When I hear an organization singling out a certain part of our conmunity as their sole reason to operate. I wonder if people realize that being 'gay' has already singled us out enough. We need to stick together, all of us, women and men. By seperating and taking your own space you are leaving some of your brothers and sisters behind. Its time to get off the soap box and realize we are in this together. No one is any better or worse than the other guy/girl.
