El Paso County Democratic Party
1975 Affirmative Action Decision
On November 15, 1975, the El Paso County Democratic Party votes, 36 to 17, to exclude gay people from their affirmative action plan.
Community Response to the Decision
"homophobic, heterosexual supremist, racist, sexist and chauvanist."
I have no interest in supporting or being a part of the Democratic Party or any other party which dominates, controls or oppresses me and my life. I think it is incongruent for the Democratic Party to include me as a woman but exclude me as a gay person.
The irony is that there are already gay people among the ranks of the Democratic Partv and I support those gay people and understand why they must remain quiet. Secrecy is often the key to survival for a gav person in this hostile society. As an invisible minority we have the option of sending more people to infiltrate their party. Situations like this give me more energy to continue the struggle against heterosexual supremacy.
I am a woman, 1 am an American and I am gay. I think it is too bad that the American people in protecting freedom in the Bicentennial year feel it necssary to exclude homosexuals, who are also Americans, from the same freedom and rights they were born into when they were born Americans.
